15 steps to help relieve stress & anxiety
Stress and anxiety feel hard. But there are things that we can do to help ourselves when we feel like this. Here are 15 steps that will help you feel better if you’re feeling stressed and anxious.
Do some exercise
Physical activity can help to make you feel less stressed and lighten your mood. This could be something simple to start with, such as walking or riding your bike.
Get good at self care
Examples of self care include taking a bath, getting a good night’s sleep and making sure you have time to rest.
Eat healthily
Foods that have a lot of sugar in are one example of how what we eat can make us feel stressed. Eating more fruit, vegetables, fish, nuts and needs can help you with both stress and mood.
Try some mindfulness
When you practice mindfulness you’re able to stay in the present moment more. This can stop you listening to anxiety stories in your head or spending hours worrying.
Be with the people you love
If we don’t have social support we can feel lonely and depressed. So, it’s important to spend time with friends and family to feel good.
Learn to say no
Sometimes, stress and anxiety are the result of taking on too much. So, it’s really important to be able to say no and to feel in control of your schedule and who influences who you feel and think.
Put your phone down
Lots of studies have now found that spending too much time on your phone can make you feel stressed and anxious. It can also affect sleep.
Take vitamins
There are certain vitamins and minerals that can help with stress and anxiety, including magnesium and vitamin B6.
Drink less coffee and tea
Caffeine can be healthy in moderation but too much of it will make you feel a lot more stressed and anxious.
Don’t put things off
Procrastination – putting things off – has been linked to feeling more stressed. That’s because it means you get less done and then fall behind, which can make you feel very anxious. The less you put things off, the less stressful life will feel.
Breathe well
Few of us think about how we breathe but this directly affects how stressed we feel. Being able to breathe deeply and calmly will help you slow down and reduce stress.
Try some yoga
There have been lots of yoga studies that have shown it’s an activity that has a positive impact on your body and mind when it comes to feeling calmer and less stressed.
Hug a friend
When humans hug each other, happy hormones are released and we tend to start to feel more relaxed and at ease.
Spend some time in natural places
Even just 10 minutes in nature can help to improve your mindset and how you feel.
Get a pet
Spending time with a dog, for example, means less loneliness and anxiety and better self-esteem and confidence.
